2008 Election Day Success Stories

The 2008 election is history and we’ve made history in electing the first African-American for President of these United States.

Barack Obama, our NALC supported candidate, has won a convincing victory over John McCain with the help of a broad coalition of voters—blacks, Hispanics, single women, white college educated men/women and trade unionists and their families all voted overwhelmingly for Obama.

Let me thank those members of Branch 2128 who came out and worked to get our candidates elected. Canvassing neighborhoods and walking door to door in Ocean County were Bob Bittay of Lakehurst and myself. We spent 5 hours on Sunday, October 19th talking to union households and asking for their support of our candidates.

Barack won NJ handily as did Frank Lautenberg (the Senate candidate). Our Republican 4th District Congressman, Chris Smith, had a landslide victory of his own and John Adler, the AFL-CIO endorsed candidate for the 3rd district eked out a thousand vote win and will begin his career in Washington taking over Jim Saxton’s old seat.

Working for Branch 2128 at the phone bank set up at the Brick NALC union hall, Al Kloza, John Nagy, Michele Galda and Dave Balog made close to 1,000 calls to union families asking them for their support on Election Day. I’d like to think we made a difference in getting Democrat John Adler elected in this predominantly Republican district.

In addition, I attended the Adler/Meyers debate held at Ocean County College along with Branch 2128 retiree, Harvey Bernstein. If you had been there I think you’d agree that Adler best represents the needs of working families and I’m thankful that he prevailed after all the votes were counted. I look forward to working with him—educating him about letter carrier issues—as he makes his way from NJ to our nation’s capital.

Thanks go out as well to Branch 2128 members Joe Palmerson, Amy Masker and Ray Gianotti who showed their support of the NALC political agenda by attending the labor rally on October 19th at the Quality Inn in Toms River.

Last but not least, thanks to all of our Branch 2128 members who have signed up for payroll deductions to COLCPE. Lots of money goes into the get out the vote effort and this year, with the election of all of our local and national candidates, the money appears to have been well spent. Look for the listing of COLCPE contributors in the special February issue of the Postal Record.

In solidarity,

Alan Kloza, Br. 2128 Legislative Director
